From what I know about oxy-fuel cutting, damn near anything could be used as the "lance". It's the oxygen that does the cutting of the steel. All the bacon or bread sticks do is keep the flame going long enough for the steel to start burning.

Like with a oxy-acetylene torch, all the acetylene does is provide the pre-heat at a high enough temperature to get the steel to literally burn. At that point, once the burn is started and the oxygen flow is increased, you can turn the acetylene off completely and still continue to cut steel.

It's not easy to do, but can be done.
